Meredith Miller
Meredith is a Managing Member of Corporate Governance and Sustainable Strategies LLC, an advisory firm that provides consulting services for the investor community on human capital management, sustainability, and stakeholder and public policy strategies, drawing on the extensive corporate governance experience of the CGSS team. She is an internationally recognized corporate governance leader, having worked with funds ranging from $22 to $62B in assets under management. She has extensive experience working with both boards and management and has been a member of health and investment leadership teams with fiduciary responsibility for proxy voting and sustainable investing.
Meredith is a Director of Amalgamated Bank, a full-service socially responsible bank in New York City established 100 years ago by the Amalgamated Clothing Workers Union. Amalgamated is the largest B Corp bank. She serves on the Compensation and Human Resources, Trust, Enterprise Risk and Oversight, and Governance and Nominations Committees.
Previously, Meredith was Chief Corporate Governance Officer for the UAW Retiree Medical Benefits Trust in Detroit, Michigan. The UAW ERISA Trust was established in 2010 to provide health care to over 600,000 UAW retirees and has $62 billion in assets under management. She led corporate engagements including a $6T Human Capital Management Coalition and a $4T Investors for Opioid & Pharmaceutical Accountability Coalition and was a member of the Sustainable Investment Team. She petitioned the SEC in 2017 on behalf of the Human Capital Management Coalition which became the basis for the 2020 SEC S-k disclosure rules on human capital. She also founded the Midwest Investor Diversity Initiative in 2016 which resulted in the appointment of 90 diverse directors; published the Diverse Search Tool Kit; and led to the Northeast Investor Diversity Initiative.
Meredith was Assistant Treasurer for Policy with the Office of the Connecticut State Treasurer from 1999-2010. She directed the Corporate Governance Program for the $22B Connecticut Retirement Plan and Trust Funds and worked with the investment team to evaluate the ESG of managers and directed the Treasurer’s Financial Education Initiative.
Prior to her role with the Connecticut State Treasurer’s Office, she was with the Pension and Benefits Welfare Administration (PBWA) with the U.S. Department of Labor, where she was Acting Assistant Secretary and Deputy Assistant Secretary. She also worked for the AFL-CIO as Assistant Director, Department of Employee Benefits, and with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) as Assistant Director of Research for Employee Benefits.
Meredith is a member of the Investment Integration Project Advisory Council and the Global Reporting Initiative Supervisory Board.
Meredith received a BA degree from Hampshire College and a Master of Science in Industrial and Personnel Relations from the London School of Economics (First in Class with Distinction). She has completed all requirements except the dissertation for a Ph.D. in Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University.
